I love this Museum, we like to go to special exhibitions. The regular exhibition shows such an outburst of European eclecticism through the centuries that it's fun to go every half a year.

Lovely art gallery with sculptures and painting reminds of American and European 15th to 19th century art.

I have been in San Francisco many time and I get not tired of this awesome museum they have LOTS really LOTS of unique art pieces I am so please with the contributors of this magnificent place, hope these pics give you a glimpse of all the art you can see there, a recommendation is to try to spend some time over there because the place is huge, from outside looks small but it is so roomy

Early Ruben is fantastic! The guy was a genius. His paintings are beautiful, true works of art. There's so much going on in them, such level of detail, and the way he depicts (high)light(s) is just wonderful. The test of the museum is well worth a visit as well!

Wonderful museum. Saw the Tissot (temporary) exhibit. The views of Golden Gate bridge, SF and the beaches surrounding SF are phenomenal.

They have some great pieces, but surprisingly few on show overall. Much smaller than I expected from the outward appearance and admission price. They also seem to lack a good curator or exhibit designer: many of the paintings could not be viewed properly because of the way the lights were pointed at them, causing a lot of glare. In front of others, display boxes and pedestals are placed where you would ideally stand to view the painting.Staff was a bit rude, and I didn't understand the policy of having to carry small backpacks in my hand. If it was to protect the exhibits, then that would have been less than effective as I saw several women nearly knock into pieces with their bags that they carried in their hands.

LOVED IT! The exhibitions are masterful works of self expression. Egyptian Greek Catholic. I was lucky to see the Early Ruben gallery! His art work is so colorful an vibrant. The portraits seem to be alive. A must see if you get a chance. Definitely going back. The best part about it is the first Tuesdays of every month are free!

I've been a member for several years. It has a good decorative arts collection and a couple of 18th C. French rooms. Parking can be a problem.

I enjoy going here. Unlike other museums that tend to get a bit cacaphonous, the Legion of Honor tends to have that quiet, "traditional"-type museum atmosphere. I was here on a "free" day that is periodically offered to San Francisco Residents. The museum staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoyed my time there very much.

The outside area has a great view of San Francisco, allowing views of numerous famous landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge. The Holocaust Memorial sculptures near the fountain area is very powerful. The museum itself has a good amount of permanent exhibitions on display. Bank of America customers can get free general admission on the 1st full weekend of each month! Just show your BofA debit card and a photo ID.When I visited, the Early Rubens gallery was the special exhibition at the time. Some very powerful pieces in this collection. Glad I saw it. The parking spaces by the fountain are the most convenient but they get filled up quickly. There are more spaces to the side of the museum as well as another lot on the way up from Clement St if you can walk up a slope. There is a decent cafe onsite if you need to grab a bite. But there are plenty of places to eat around the area. I recommend going early before 11am to avoid the crowd. You'll get to enjoy the place more that way.

Brilliant and diverse collections from generations of generous San Franciscans. Rodin, ceramics, ancient world, Rembrandt and other jewels of western art...

This is a stunning museum with beautiful architecture inside and out. We paid extra to see the Early Rubens exhibit and we were glad we did. The paintings are incredible! And huge! Throughout the rest of the museum, there is a lot of beautiful art all very thoughtfully displayed. We saw some Monet, Rodin, Cézanne, and so many other famous artists. They have a lovely cafe with really good food. It's a bit pricey ($18 for sandwiches), but at least it was tasty and we didn't have to leave.

This definitely worth visiting Museum. There is lot of good collection of paintings and sculptures. There is also restaurant inside the museum. Architecture of the museum is simply beautiful. Above all there is free entrance for bay area residents on Saturdays.

Such a beautiful building, housing great pieces of artwork. Not just paintings, I came to find out, but, for example, a tea service once belonging to royalty...Grand Duchess Victoria Melita, aka "Ducky", once married to Empress Alexandra's brother, Ernst, who then married a cousin of the Tsar. Other pieces included objects made by Fabergé!! (Was extremely excited to see them. Not one of the famous eggs, unfortunately, but still delightful pieces!) The special exhibition was celebrating the works of James Tissot. His name didn't sound familiar, but once I was viewing his portraits, recognition came immediately, solely because Oxford World Classics used some of these portraits on the covers of Anthony Trollope's Palliser series; he is a favorite author of mine. Seeing more of James Tissot's work, I've found a new favorite artist. A delightful excursion all round!

The museum was nice. It isnt too large to do in half a day. The courtyard with The Thinker was my favorite part. The cafe wasn't anything to write home about.Great views of the city and Golden Gate Bridge.Hiking trails and beaches are close so you can make a full day of the destination.

A little off the beaten path, great views from the outside. Diverse, if not deep collection though definitely worth a visit, not crowded and relaxing cafe for resting after your visit. Gift shop a little pricey...staff very helpful.

Enjoyed visiting this museum. The external architecture, the interior charm, not to metion the exhibits make it worthwhile. A wonderful place to take pictures. Just one of many beautiful places to visit in San Francisco. Accessible via public transportation.

The museum is really cool.. I went there by bus and walked up hills.. the view is great, can even see the Golden Gate Bridge. It only took about 10-15 minutes to arrive at the museum. Definitely worth visiting. The museum buildings is awesome, the collections, such as quite a few Rodin sculptures, and classic pairing from Dutch, French, Italian and American. I love the special exhibition of early Rubins. It was awesome.

This is a great tribute to all of the people that have served, currently serving. I reccomend it to all people and would hope that schools would take students there. God bless those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those who returned.

Small as an art museum but has the typical elegant feeling. Outside the museum, the seaside hiking and golden bridge sightseeing alone would worth the trip. Besides, parking has never been a problem in my experience.

Impressive collection of Rodin sculpture and stunning building in the neoclassical tradition. Also, look up the woman who created the museum, Alma Spreckels. Her story is amazing.

Stunning views. Magnificent setting. Great art. All this in wonderful Bay Area setting. Cool, not hot and sticky like valley. No wonder this is many folks favorite city! Frisco is the greatest!! I left my heart in Frisco and most of my money too! Still it's well worth it.

I love museums and though this one was small, it's still a beautiful building that you have to see if you love architecture. It's also in a picturesque location where you can get a clear view of the golden gate bridge as long as its not too foggy. If you need a break from the crowds in the city, come check this place out, especially on a weekday. Parking is free here too, if you can find a spot.

The building itself is worthy of a visit. ItÒ€ℒs striking architecture transports you to another world. The art inside is striking as well- particularly the Rodin works. The size is manageable, it certainly doesnÒ€ℒt feel small if youÒ€ℒre taking some time with the works. Enjoy!

have been to many museums and this one ranks at the top, actually considerably better than it's counterpart the de Young Museum(though single admission gets you into both museums same-day).It's not a overly large museum, but it is filled with quality and interesting pieces that made the whole experience enjoyable. Also, I suggest taking one of their free tours as it was very informative and the theme of the tour interesting.Time-wise, you are probably looking at a good 2-2.5 hours here.

Beautiful museum in a beautiful part of San Francisco. The museum itself is relatively small but with great prices from mostly European painters. Initially built as a copy of the museum in Paris, to house the collection of Rodin sculptures - are there are quite a few here. There was an organ performance when we visited and SF residents get free entrance every Saturday - being proof of address and ID. Save time to walk around the surrounding area afterwards!

General admission is free the first Tuesday of every month. Special exhibition fees still apply.

I recommend the The Laurel Inn in Laurel Heights or perhaps the Inn at the Presidio. However both hotels are an hour walk to the Legion of Honor. However, Laurel Heights is north of golden gate park and south of the Legion of Honor. There are public buses and Lyft and Uber are also options. I strongly suggest staying as far away from Union Square as possible as it is quite terrible. If you are interested in the Legion of Honor I suggest you also consider the DeYoung Museum, the conservatory of Flowers and the Japanese garden. Which are all in Golden Gate Park.
